Chapter Red.

This video attempts to translate transient emotions into concrete images, depicting the nervousness I felt before a track and field race in primary school by several visual symbols like the colour red, the bedsheet and the picture frame.

My task: Make a 15 to 20 scene 1:30 minute video that shows scenes or objects that represents your childhood.

In this video, I have decided to portray my nervousness before a track and field race when I was in primary school. Here, red symbolises many things: the stadium track, my fear and blood. I wanted to portray a feeling of being trapped and unable to escape from participating in the race, and took a more metaphorical approach by showing myself becoming one with the stadium track. I did so by covering myself with a red bedsheet.

Hence, red also becomes a force of unity, resulting in the merging of different forms: my body to the stadium ground. This fantastical plot line aims to spark conversation about the blurring lines between the living and non-living, and how my nervousness at the moments before the race appear to have transcended beyond logic.

The making of this video enabled me to develop skills in lighting a scene, as well as providing an introduction to handling a digital video camera. Experimenting with various camera frames and movements, I learnt to create my own visual language with regards to mise en scene. I am also able to understand skills in handling codecs and formats.
